Mouse jumps to corner and freezes

I have an 800 MHz G3 iBook, which has already had the logic board repaired numerous times. Recently a friend had given me his optical mouse from his new iMac (he prefers a track ball).

At times the mouse will jump to one corner of the screen and freeze. So far it takes quite a bit of motion to free the mouse from the corner. (Moving the mouse about on the desk until I can see it appear in the middle of the screen.)

This seems to happen rather randomly.

I have a similar problem on my G5 with standard Apple mouse. It happens pretty randomly, usually when using more processor heavy applications. It doesn't actually stick, just I lost sight of the cursor as it jumps to the side of the screen. I've never known what is causing it, and have put up with it so far. Sorry not to offer anything more helpful, other than for you to know you are not alone!

I cured the mouse jump by changing mouse mats. Original was screen printed (lots of small dots) the current one is two colours - plain white with green writing.

I believe I have solved the problem.

The mouse was on my desk, bare with a woodgrain applique. Just by chance (knowing that this same style mouse has worn the appliques off the desks at work) I placed a mousepad under the mouse. I originally did not try this because I feel the pad hampers my mobility, but it seems to have solved the problem. Apparently it had to do with the way the beam was bouncing off the desk finish.
