Moved Home folder from one Mac to another... permissions problems.

Well, I have my spiffy new AlBook, and had the genius idea of simply hooking up my previous Mac to this one via FireWire, and replacing my new "Desktop", "Documents," and other folders with the old (full of my old files) folders. I log out, log back in, and then start running Batchmod (great little utility) to start repairing permissions on the preference folder and stuff. But.... I'm still having some problems. My Mac seems to not auto-choose the Airport base station after waking up from sleep, and a few other funky things have been going on.... anybody have recommendations as to the ultimate repair-my-permissions-for-me utility?

You need to make sure that your UID # is the same on both machines...

Open /Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager

Look at /users/<username>/ uid

It doesn't recognize the user as the owner of it. Repairing permissions corrects many odd things.

Well, it turns out for the AirPort to work, all I had to do was choose "Automatic" choosing of the Airport in the Network pane. Sometimes it's just the simplest solution.

TommyWillB... thanks for the uid thingy... had no idea that's how it worked. i thought it would just recognize the same short username. I'll try adjusting that. Thanks, folks.

EDIT: The UIDs are the same.... I think most of the freakiness is over.

Alright... now... my next problem... I have no idea if it has to do with permissions, but why does my "Network" thingy in Panther not show the computers connected to the LAN?

heheh. Thanks in advance.

I find the network tab to be a bit of a work in progress for me. One minute they're there, one minute they're not, and it's even worse with smb shares. 'Connect to server' never fails me.

My 10.3 "network" thingy used to work perfectly. It would show me all the local Macs. Now, it just gives me those three empty folders. This is more like how it used to act in 10.2, not showing the local Macs. Anybody know what triggers one behavior versus the other?
