greetings,
i am running a 10.3.9 server on a G4 at my school supporting about 400 users. we are getting ready to buy a new mac pro and run 10.4 server. I want to preserve all of my users data, passwords and other login info to import into our new server. what is the best way to do this?
thank you

Maybe it is wise to wait for 10.5 server. I am not sure when it will come, but we are halfway through 10.4.

Also maybe it is a good idea to keep the old server available as Open Directory server, so there is no need for moving the users. Server 10.4 can access users defined on a 10.3.9 server.

Good luck, Kees

Depends on timeframe. Most folks will be weary of simply throwing 10.5.0 into live production, without proper testing with their infrastructure.

Tiger's OD is going to provide the OP with additional schema attributes in the OpenLDAP database, such as Jabber Server, Software Update Server and so forth.

Personally, if I was moving between the OSes, which I have done, I'd build a new directory structure. It is a rare chance you have and not that hard. Through the GUI you can dump out the LDAP info, if you wanted. You can also use slapcat to get out the LDAP entries into an importable, standard ldif file. The password server is a bit trickier, as you'd be looking at mkpassdb for that functionality. You'll also want to manually edit some of the LDAP entries so that they migrate cleanly.

Done it before. Try it out on some test boxes first to be sure you get it right. Take your time and backup EVERYTHING! :)

slapcat and mkpassdb in the ways you'll be using them won't be destructive to your OD Master, but always think twice before you plug on through!
