Moving System from one drive to another

I have dual 250GB hard drives in my G5. The original that has my home folder, system, applications and everything else on it decided to die.

I managed to copy my /Users; /Library; /Applications directories to the drive that is still good. Can I just install OSX over them and expect most things to work? Will it install properly and not overwrite my data?

I do expect that I'll have to install some of the more complicated applications, which is no problem, but what I don't want is to have to go through and re set everything up.

Why not use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the system to the other drive?

Because the source drive is too unstable. It took 3 days for me to copy what I managed to save.

Since you're having this problem with the first drive, my choice would be to install X on the second drive fresh and setup everything again rather than transfer anything, incase something in that system may have something to do with the problem.
