mp3 bitrate changer

Anyone know of a freeware/shareware/cheap :) utility for changing mp3 bitrates. I've a few mp3's that I've made to use as ringtones but they are a little large. Lowering the bitrate would be ideal. TIA

I've always used iTunes to lower the bit rates, I'm too lazy to find another program I guess. Just change the settings for 'import' to something lower, then use the convert selection feature on your MP3. (You might have to convert to another format first, then do that.)

No you don't need to change formats. In fact you don't need to change anything, it could even be the same settings and iTunes will still do the conversion. I do it all the time correcting people's bizarre settings.

What you need is in:

iTunes>Preferences>Importing>Setting>Custom

Just be sure that you are downsampling. Also be sure that what you are converting isn't down to too low a bitrate or hasn't been converted before. Both will introduce artifacts like a metallic flutter or slur, particularly when repeatedly converted.

Best to ensure you do your sampling from an original source such as CD and you can get down to even 16kbs without too much damage, although 32kbs is better. 24kbs if the original is simple clear music like old pop or jazz.

Keep in mind the tiny little speaker in your phone is not going to give you symphonic results anyway.
