MS Word custom dictionary "not available"

Getting messages that my Word 2004 custom dictionaries are "not available." Flaky performance, with newly created dictionaries working briefly but then not available. MS's built-in custom dictionary the same. All was fine with Word X. Bugs in Word 2004, or some other explanation and suggestions?
