MS Word launches, but freezes upon edit

I have a document that is 33 pages long, and which is linked to EndNote for its citations and bibliography.

Each time I open the document, it seems to launch properly. But if I do anything, even add a space into the document, the program freezes ("application not responding", accompanied by the neverending rotating cursor of death). The first few times this happened, I simply closed the document and opened it up again. When that didn't work, I copied the whole thing into a new blank doc, which seemed to take are of it until the next time I needed to open it up. Obviously it is not an ideal solution if I am having to do it every time!

All other word-generated documents seem to be functioning properly...and I'm not having other editing issues, except for the horrible lag time trying to switch between Word and any other program (safari, etc).

Is this all problem with Word, or is it a known issue with EndNote? This document is going to eventually grow to 200+ pages-- written in separate sections, but eventually compiled. So I'd rather deal with this now (new software? computer issue?) than later.

Word 2004 for Mac, version 11.5
