Please help me rescue my MSN messenger from The Riddler.....

That question mark means that the link between the Dock icon and the application is broken. The Dock's icons are not really aliases, like they would be if you actually created an alias to the MSN Messenger on your Desktop. If you move the file, the alias will recover and correct the link. With the Dock, however, this doesn't happen.

MSN Messenger was recently (many weeks ago, at least) changed to Microsoft Messenger. Also, I don't think that it, by default, would be in the same place that MSN Messenger was (in the Office 2004 folder, inside the Applications folder). Given the fact that the name changed, and the new Messenger is probably in your Applications folder, the link in the Dock is probably just broken.

Drag the icon from the Dock to the Desktop, and let go. Poof! It goes bye bye. Now, find the new Microsoft Messenger application, and drag it's icon to the Dock. Now it should work for you.

If you can't find the Microsoft Messenger application (it will either be in the Applications folder, or the Microsoft Office folder, inside the Applications folder), then you may have trashed it. Go get it again from Microsoft's Web site, and re-install it, and then follow the steps above to get it back into the Dock.

HI gurl

to avoid it all check for Adium and reinput your id and pw for MSN you will then be set. Other than that do follow the very good advice given by dmetzcher ....

'The Dock's icons are not really aliases, like they would be if you actually created an alias to the MSN Messenger on your Desktop. If you move the file, the alias will recover and correct the link. With the Dock, however, this doesn't happen.' - is incorrect. The 'icon' of a 'Dock' based item or 'Finder' created 'alias' is not the alias; but, a graphical representation of the original item. Also, any item (application, document, or folder) dragged onto the 'Dock' will be tracked, as a standard 'Finder' created 'alias'.

If a '?' mark appears on a 'Dock' icon of an item - either the original item was deleted, or the reference to the item was damaged by a MacOS X hic-cup.

Whether a 'Dock' based reference or a 'Finder' created 'alias' - move the original item to another volume and then delete the original item itself, and a '?' will appear on the item's 'Dock' based icon - or an alert box (allowing one to 'Delete Alias', 'Fix Alias...', or ignore the warning by clicking on the 'OK' button) will appear when the 'Finder' created 'alias' is double clicked on.

'... an alias will recover and correct the link' - is incorrect. 'Alias'es do not recover, the MacOS X updates the reference of the moved original (within the same volume) within the 'alias' file; just as it does the reference within the 'Dock's 'com.apple.dock.plist' file.
