I just recently bought a new mouse with five buttons (this one; great bargain). My last mouse had three buttons. I find myself at a loss for what to use all these buttons for. So I'm just wondering, what kind of mouse do you have, and what do you use its buttons for?
Here's my current setup. I still haven't really decided on uses for the thumb and pinky buttons yet.
Global settings
Left button: Regular click. Duh.
Middle (wheel) button: Right click (I don't find contextual menus useful enough to justify my big right button).
Scroll wheel: Scrolling. (Again, duh!)
Pinky finger button: Exposé reveal desktop
App-specific settings
Web browsers:
Right button: Open link in new background tab.
Thumb button: Go to next tab.
Finder:
Right button: option-double-click (i.e., open an item and close its enclosing folder)
Thumb button: Open enclosing folder (command-up arrow)
I'm interested to hear how everyone else uses their mice. I need ideas.
