Multiple user access to iPhoto and iTunes libraries

Hello helpers:

I have just made the switch from Windows to MACOSX and I come from a Linux development background. I have create 2 user accounts on my iMac and I want to enable each of them to see the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries, but I wish to avoid using the "sharing" capability as I do not want them accessible from other machines on the LAN.

I tried creating some symbolic links from my wifes account into my account but iPhoto refused to "see" the library.

Is this something that can be accomplished from the GUI rather than having to resort to xterm level hacking ?
