My brand new iMac wont keep the connection alive for more than 10 minutes at most! PAINFUL!!

Plus, at boot, it says "Waiting for network initialization" and takes a painfully long time to get past that... aand the funny thing is that i DONT HAVE a network installed!!!

Help me out please...

When you say it can't keep the connection alive do you mean the 56K modem or the ethernet? My iMac won't hold a connection on the 56K modem for more than 5 minutes :)

I gave up on it after several OSX updates that promised to fix the problem but it still existed. So I went and got broadband instead.

Regarding the "Waiting for network initialization" problem, go into the Network preference pane. In the drop down combo box where you select you network port, it lists the modem, the ethernet port, and an option to setup network ports, select that. Remove the check mark for the ethernet port and click Apply. That should disable the ethernet port. You might also want to disable some directory services like LDAP if you don't use them. The app to do that is in /Applications/Utilities and I think it's called "Directory Manager" or something with the work Directory in it. Uncheck the directory services you don't need and reboot. Which ones are safe to uncheck, I don't know, it depends on your envrionment is like and what services you use.
