My dear friend at IT-department

Okay. First let me say that this is a is a true story. ;-)

On my friend's G4 there are separate installations of OS9 and OSX and both
can be chosen as startup volume. There is even a third startup volume (they called it network-volume - whatever that should be ..hehe)
but when that one is being selected, the workstation won't boot at all :-)

Today he tried to connect to other G4s via "connect to server"
(smb/afp). But he was not able to connect to another macosx workstation.

That's why he asked somebody from the IT department, what the problem was and why he was not able to connect to other mac's.

Here's the answer of our dear friend from IT:
- "You have changed the appearance of the"dock". That's why you can't connect to other workstations" ( ah.... really ???? :-D
and
- "You booted to OS9. When you do that, the system overwrites the network preferences and deletes important information. If you then boot to OSX the next time, networking won't be possible anymore." (Cool, so why do I have the option to choose OS9 as startup volume? :-) Btw, I thought, OS9 and OSX have different preferences folders and one is not affecting the other?)

What do you think about these hints from our IT?? ;-)

Cheers...and have a nice day.

Your IT department is full of crap, they obviously don't know anything about Macs.

You could delete the Dock and it wouldn't have anything to do with connecting to a server or another machine.

OS 9 and X do have their own Preferences, completely different systems.

Leave more info on the setup and someone will help you.

And forward this thread to the IT manager when it's done. That's horrible. Makes the (un)Help desk @ my place seem bright, and that's a task and a half, dock or no dock. :p

Hi Bobw,

that's just what I thought :D
But normally, these IT guys should know something about mac ;)

Well, as he is the IT guy in the company and not me, I am just gonna
wait and let him figure out a solution... :D
(I wonder what his next hint will be....hehehe)
Cheers

If you want to frazzle him, turn on magnify and suck for your dock (boy that sounds kinky), then hit it and ask him what's going on. Or turn on voice recognition and start turning stuff on and off via Voice.
In my experiences, most IT depts are like a pitching unit, you have one or two closers who are Mac wizards, the others wouldn't know a Mac from an Atari 2600.

Hey Randman,

This will drive him nuts....hehe
Thxs for these really creative hints...:D
