I am going on my first plane flight this weekend and plan on taking my 12" powerbook and iPod photo.

Just wanted to know if there is anything I should do, or keep in mind. I have also been thinking about the various detectors they have at airports...is there anything regarding there functionality that could damage my devices? In particular, the hard drives?

I guess maybe I should check out howstuffworks to see if any magnetism is involved.

The xrays don't harm the devices (computers, digicams etc).
I 99 % of the time have the powerbook in hte sleep mode when I fly -- that in case they want to check that it works, and if I also want to use it up in the plane, it is ready a lot faster. For some reason, starting up totally the computers in hte cabin pressure takes a looooong time.
Depending on where you fly, you may have to take out the laptop to a separate tray for xray, and show that it works.
Enjoy your flight ;)

This will help you move through the screening process faster: Be ready to take your computer out of your case when you walk through the xray/screening machine. Don't wear a belt if possible. Wear casual shoes not boots, dress shoes as they may have metal in the soles. put your ipod photo, watch, keys, jewelry and other metalobjects in your carry on or in your jacket pockets. remember to pick up your laptop with your other belongings. (I've seen an orphaned Dell laptop with no one paying any attention to it at an international terminal ...)

Also, for safety sake: Don't wear or carry anything that attracts attention from thieves. Be discreet. Be suspicious of unusual activities ... someone dropping lots of cash, causing chaos or uproar. It's an opportunity for thieves to distract travelers from their belongings. But other than that, you'll be just fine.

If you can get one in time, the Radtech sleevez are great at protecting the Alu finish from being scratched, especially when you have to take the PB out at the airport security check.
