My iMac cannot boot up

Hi there

i have a problem with my iMAC which i hope someone can advise me..

It is Revision A 233 MHz Bondi iMac. Recently it just will not start. When i pressed the power button, the machine shuts itself off after 2-3 seconds.

At first i thought it was the battery, so i got it replaced. Did it myself. It still had the same problem.

Then i thought the additional 256MB RAM which i installed a few months ago was faulty. So i removed it. Now it won't power up at all....

Anyone knows what causes the iMac not to startup?

thanks in advance

These are some basic quick fixes. Did you:
• hold down Shift at start up?
• hold down Command-Option-P-R to zap the parameter RAM (PRAM)?
• try booting from a CD by putting it in and holding the C key at startup?

It sounds like you have a hardware conflict. Unfortunately, I'm not qualified enough to troubleshoot your problem with the information I have been given, but someone who is will read this soon enough and recommend something.

I have a problem with my iMac (Rev. D I think, 400 Mhz DV+ish) whereby on restart it frequently freezes. I have to restart with extensions off.

Which system are you using? If you are using X, hold Cmd-V at startup to show exactly what functions are being run as it starts.

The Rev. A's, being just a few marketing stages out of beta, were naturally buggy and many have significant problems. Either take the machine in to be serviced, or extract and recover its hard drive and replace the machine.

When did this start to happen? After you installed the additional ram? Or after you installed a new program or updated the OS? If you updated the OS did you update the firmware first?

Now that you have been in and out of the machine, did you check to make sure all those cables and plugs were snuggly in there place? It could be one of them is loose and that will cause a non start up.

Did you drop one of those tiny screws inside the machine? That will cause a Major problem. Did you ground yourself before touching anything inside the machine? If while inside the machine, you got a static shock, your motherboard is gone. You have zapped it permanently. :(

Try replacing the power cord - if it still doesn't work, it's most likely internal components having been zapped as Cheryl said, or the power supply that has decided to say goodbye.

Thanks for all the advice

The machine only became faulty a few days ago.

The RAM was installed a few months back and the firmware was updated then too successfully.

I have double checked and there are no missing screws or screws lying about inside the machine.

Looks like it is most probably the power supply then. Does anyone know how much it will cost?
