I have an iMac DV SE that wont boot the only way that i have found that i can make it boot is when i hold down the programmers button and boot from firmware. what happens is it turns on, sounds like its thinking, then just stops making any noise, the screen never actually turns on though, so what i do is just after i hear the boot tone i hold in the programmers button, it only used to do this every once and in a while but now it does it at every boot, could it be a battery?

First, I suggest you use the OS Cd and boot from that (insert the CD, start her up and hold down the C key). Run disk first Aide (in the utility folder) and have it repair all the problems it finds.

What OS are you running?

10.2.6, i dont think its an os problem, it never even gets to the boot-loader, it seems like it could be firmware maybe, but when i type the command 'mac-boot' at the prompt its able to find the bootloader and load the system, but i also used to have problems with my clock and date as well as with my screen becoming a bit dimmer at boot(which was usualy fixed by recalibrating the rgb profile though)

Disk Utility will check out the drive. Drive 10 will check the drive and the software installed. If disk Utility finds problems that it can not repair, it will tell you to use a third party utility and I highly recommend Drive 10 from Micromat.

If you continue to boot they way you have been, you can be making the problem worse.
