My Mac Seems Really Slow

I am a new Mac user after many years on Windows computers. I started out pretty cheap by buying a G4 Sawtooth running at 500 megahertz with 512 megs of memory. I notice that the machine has lots of trouble playing any type of video on the Internet. The machine is pretty old but I thought that it at least would be able to handle YouTube videos pretty smoothly. Is there any way to speed up the machine so that it can render videos a lot better?

Hi xanax,

Which version of operating system does it have now?

How it performs with videos depends partially on the hardware limitations, but also on what system it has installed.

That Mac should handle it fine, I have a 400Mhz PCI G4 with the same amount of Ram and that runs videos from youtube and other sites with no issues. Does it play movie files stored on the Mac OK ? If so I would suggest you check out the networking side of things as your problem may lay there.

Hi, since I am new to the world of Mac, what exactly would I check in the Networking? I use Verizon DSL and my download speeds seem fine and most websites load pretty quick under Safari. It is just the videos that stutter and are almost unwatchable. Can you do me a favor and go to CNN.com sometime and load some of their videos? My machine simply cannot run their videos at all and they are totally out of sync with the audio.

I forgot to mention that I have the OEM Nvidia Geforce2 video card with only 32 megs of video ram? I wonder if a newer card might help render the videos? Also, I have a very slow SCSI hard drive in this computer, for some reason the previous owner took out the ATA drive and stuck in this antique. I wonder if the bottleneck might be the hard drive? What video card and other hardware do you have on your G4?
