My MBP drive won't read/write to CDs & DVDs

When I first got the MBP it burned Verbatim DVD-Rs 80% of the time and most of the CD-Rs that I had used. I initially thought that the batch of DVD-Rs weren't any good since I made so many coasters with them. Now I can't burn any DVDs/CDs with iTunes, Finder, Disk Utility etc. anymore, and now I just found out that my MBP won't read any data discs, not even the discs I had burned with my MBP. Movie DVDs still play fine though.
Anything I should try before calling Apple? I don't want to be without the MBP if I don't have to but I will have to send it in if I do.
TIA

It has just been deteriorating over time obviously. See them all the time on MBPs. Just needs a new superdrive.

Something I really didn't want to hear. :)
For the amount that is being charged by Apple for MBPs, one shouldn't be seeing this happen all the time.
Oh well, maybe Apple will fix my occasional keyboard and trackpad freezes at the same time.
