My Type 1 font saga

I have had the hardest time installing Type 1 fonts in Mac OS X. They never show up in any of the applications' font menus.

Today I had some more luck. I dragged fonts from my Mac OS 9 Fonts folder directly to /Library/Fonts/. I launched MS Word v. X and I was able to select them from the Fonts pop-up menu. I installed some more, and MS Word wouldn't launch anymore but would unexpectedly quit after the splash screen.

The above link suggested pulling the fonts out of the Fonts folder and putting them back one by one, to see, which cause the problem during the MS Word launch.

This fixed the MS Word crash, but with all of the fonts back in /Library/Fonts/ they don't show up in the fonts menu anymore. Luckily, I can put them into ~/Library/Fonts/ and have them usable, but then only that user can use them.

I would love to know, whether this is a known bug in Mac OS X. I'm running 10.1.2, by the way.

In a similar thread at the MacNN forums chris v replied with the suggestion of bad fonts.

With that, my font saga continues. Based on chris v's advice, I copied all the fonts I want to use from their original disks to /Library/Fonts. His suggestion about corrupted font files is further supported by MS Word's unexpectedly quitting just after it puts up the splash screen, which is, according to Microsoft, an indication of a corrupted font.

The good news is that they all showed up in MS Word's fonts menu. The bad news is that, when I use any of the fonts, the insertion point moves ahead, but no characters are put on the screen, show up in the Print Preview, or on the printed page.

I'm back to putting the fonts into ~/Library/Fonts/ now, where they work without a hitch.
