MySQL 4.1.9 and os 10.3.7 don't mix

Has anyone tried to upgrade to mysql 4.1.9 on to their mac? I'm running 10.3.7 (and previously had MySQL 4.0.18 I think) and I downloaded the installer from the mysql site http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.0.html .

The installer ran ok, but when I tried to fire up mysql I got a socket error (61 and 2). After 2 days of searching for an answer I gave up and installed the full mysql package from www.serverlogistics.com v 4.0.23 which runs fine. It would be nice to upgrade as my hosting company has 4.1.8 and there are some inconsistencies when importing sql dumps locally from the live site.

I have tried various things like changing permissions on the /usr/local/mysql/data directory and on the /tmp directory but to no avail. Read the platform notes at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/mac-os-x.htm for more info.

So if anyone has had the same problem and got round it, it would be good to hear from you. For those of you wanting to upgrade... you've been warned!!
