NAS woes: "connection failed" in OSX

Ok, to give you a brief history of my troubles... I got the Synology CS-407, originally connected it to my wireless router. Got that working with my OSX 10.5 MacBook. Then decided to use ethernet instead, and hooked it up ok.

I then needed to transfer my files from the PC to NAS, so hooked it up with XP. Then I stuck the cable back into the MacBook to transfer some more files... only this time it didn't work. Seems like permissions no longer worked, but I could see "cube" listed under "Shared" folders in Finder.

I then tried connecting NAS with MacMini. YAY! I could access the NAS, but only as a guest... It seemed to refuse my password. So I know that it's somewhat working with Mac, but has issues with my MacBook.

Tried setting Ethernet Network Connections to DHCP / manual IP & subnet, but that didn't work either. How do I just get it to accept me?

Thanks for all the help - I'm tearing my hair out!!!

I'm not getting you. Your NAS should be attached to one of your router's LAN ports. Your computers access the router either via Ethernet connected to other LAN ports or wirelessly. You should not try to make a direct connection between your NAS and either of your computers.

Unless you are running some novel network configuration behind your router, there is no need for manual IP addresses and subnet. Setup each computer via DHCP with automatic IP assignment by the router. Let the router do its job.
