Navigating Open Dialog Boxes

One thing I can't find or is totally missing is when I open a file in a program, the open dialog box with its multiple panes doesn't allow me to quickly navigate to the file I want by typing the first letter of the file or folder. This is the way I have always navigated in OS 9 and I desperately miss it.

Is there a way to do this in X or am I just wishing?

Try this. 1st click the section to make sure it's the active one. Then hit the letter.

Works for me in IE. But i agree that it doesn't work the same as in 9

This is a feature that will be a part of 10.2. I too miss being able to do this...
