need advice getting my iBook repaired...

OK, my iBook is screwed. Well, if I ever want to use wireless, that is. I originally got an Airport back in April, and never got the iBook to get a satisfactory signal. Thought it was my airport card, but swapped it out with no result. Then thought it was the basestation, so brought my friend over with his 'book and he got an awesome signal, with HIS card OR my card. So the problem lies within the iBook. I am REALLY unhappy because I feel it has been defective from Day one!! It's never worked. But I don't have applecare and my book is out of the one year warranty. HOW DO I GET APPLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM? Or am I just screwed? I am really upset that my iBook SHIPPED to me with the wireless capability messed up and I don't find out until I try to use Airport and it's too late. Any suggestions on getting this fixed by apple? I don't feel like i should have to pay for something that never worked!!

It's probably either the antenna is not plugged into the card properly or has become damaged in some way ... this can happen if the little cable that plugs the antenna into the card gets squished somehow (such as if the cable got jammed under the retaining clip or the card when you tried installing the card).

I'd suggest you just take it into a trusted Apple repairer and ask them to look at it. Talk to them and to Apple about the possibility of getting it repaired under warranty. Since you never actually used the feature during the warranty period, they might be willing to write off the repair under warranty, but they would do so at their discretion.

If they don't, you'll just have to pay for the repair. It shouldn't cost too much, and you may even be able to get the repair gauranteed for a time, which is always a good move.

If, like the rest of us mortals, you can't always have the latest and greatest mac or afford the AppleCare extended warranty (a must if you've got the cash, but then who thinks about it at the time?) then you're just going to have to find a trustworthy repair centre.

Last rule is: keep everything in writing - what repairs were done when and by who, who promised you what and for how much.

I've taken it to my "trusty guy" at CompUSA...I know a lot of people don't like those guys on this board, but I know a really good guy over there who's helped me with the iBook for free several times. I took it to him and he glanced at it, said it was most likely the internal antenna which runs in the screen. Is that true? But anyway, he said it would have to be sent to Apple and they'd most likely charge about $300 to fix it. OUCH! Next question: does applecare have to be bought when the 'book is new? I'mm sure it does, just wondering. Thanks for the reply; I think I may call Apple on my day off tomorrow. I couldn't find the # for customer support on the website, anyone have the appropriate # for me to call to take this up with someone?
Thanks again
Mark
