I would like to connect my eMac (10.4.8) and an old PC (Win 98) to one AT&T/Yahoo dsl connection.

the modem is a Siemens 4100

I also have this cheap "5 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch" "support - auto sensing between uplink or direct connections" - I bought it thinking that it would enable the dsl to be used by both computers at the same time. http://www.airlink101.com/products/asw105.html

I hooked everything up (from router to port one, then the other two ethernet cables that go to each computer) and basically both computers can't access the interweb at the same time.

The problem must lie in the switch - maybe I need a hub... uplink to uplink? so confused

Thanks for your help.

You need a router that also has multiple switch ports. I have the Linksys WRT54G (this model does wireless as well as wired) and it works great. Hook the DSL modem's ethernet cable to the WAN port on the router, and the computers on the LAN ports (aka, switch ports) that are built into it. You can also configure your router to act as a DHCP server and dish out IP addresses dynamically to your Mac and PC (both of which need to be set to DHCP).

There are other routers you can use other than the Linksys model. Just check any online store for routers (or wireless routers if you need wireless capabilities) and see which one you prefer
