NEED HELP---FAST! HD Kaput!

My original G4 Quicksilver 800 Dual is FAILING! I've installed a new HD and currently have the old one running in an external casing as I desperately try to retrieve the little things..like saved mail messages and olf mailboxes. I would like to import everything to the new Mail....where can I find the old files on my system?

Also, is there anyway I can copy my Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop programs over to the new drive without installing them from disk?

I also need my address book back, and anything else anyone who has been through this can think of!!! Luckily, my work files are all stored on the slave drive.

BTW - I'm running Tiger.

Boot off an installer CD, use the restore feature of Disk Utility to clone the data from the failing drive to the new drive, then do an archive and install over the top, works good, except for Photoshop, which loses the capability to double-click after an achive and install. However, if you don't have the original media, then maybe you should purchase it?

You can manually copy those from Home(=your User Folder)/Library/ --> Mail, that is the folder you want to back up. (You can then place it into Library in your new user folder on the new drive, and it should *theoretically* work with no problem; importing would be another option.

I remember back in the days of System 7 & 8 you would end up with not being able to open those apps - you just had to go to the Preferences Folder and delete the respective preference files. (On OS X Preferences is also found in Home/Library.)

Off the top of my head:

Export all your Address Book contacts, then import them on the new OS X installation.

All your bookmarks can be found in Home/Library/Safari (if you're using Safari).

I'm sure there's tons of other stuff... but can't think of them right now...

After you have backed up the most important files & folders, you could still try to do a clone from the failing drive (see below).

Best thing for the future is to keep a clone copy on an external firewire drive (you can use Carbon CopyCloner or SuperDuper to do this), and to of course regularly update it...
