Need help re: re-installing Tiger

It looks like my 10.4.4 install has messed something up. The system runs, but it's flakey. What are my options now? Is it possible to go back one version, to uninstall 10.4.4?
If not, I suppose I have to reinstall from my Tiger DVD. I've not done that before, so wonder what will happen. Will it be willing to install 10.4.1 over 10.4.4? Will it preserve my users etc.? Will I have the option w software update to go directly from 10.4.1 to 10.4.4?

Thanks in advance for help,

t.

What's flakey?

Have you repaired permissions using Disk Utility? Try this first.

If that doesn't work try a disk repair. Insert DVD and run disk utility from that.

What model Mac are you using? Did this Mac ship with 10.4.x? If not, then you might need a firmware update.

If by chance you might have to reinstall the operating system, there's an option called Archive and Install. This will rename the old System folder and create a new one while keeping the rest of the system with your apps and documents intact.

No firmware update listed for my mac.

I understand about Archive and Install. Last time I did that, I lost my users. Is there a way to avoid that?

Also, can I then upgrade from 10.4.1 to 10.4.4 via Software update?

Thanks in advance for your help
