Need to change file's "kind".

Hi. I've been working on Macs for many years but have never had this problem before.

Some Pro Tools audio files I was working on mistakenly got changed to BBEdit Text Files. Now Pro Tools can't use them. How do I change them back? I tried changing them in the "Get Info" command by changing the programs that opens them. That just changed the mini icon at the beginning of the files title. It didn't change the file's "kind".

I know there must be a way. Thanks, I can use all the help I can get on this!

Ok. I figured it out. Most of the files are opened with Quicktime. So, if I go from BBEdit to Quick time in the "open with" command in "get info". I have a problem. The icon at the beginning of the title changes correctly but the "kind" remains the same.

If I first change the "open with" to Pro Tools, then click "change all". Then, from there, change it to "quicktime" and click "change all". It changes the kind to Sound Design 2, which is correct.

I don't know why this is, but thanks for the response.

I have a similar problem: I was using Smultron to edit some of the files for putting an off-the-shelf transparent video player. After I opened the .php file to see if I needed to change the script, it associated "open with" Smultron. It ALSO changed the file "kind" from "web document" or "php script" to "smultron document". Now it won't run. Only offer a dialogue box asking if I want to Open or Save the file.

Answer to the obvious question: no, my mucking about didn't break the programming link. I went back to the original folder/files for the gag (transferred from my Gateway laptop, which is running it perfectly well). Same deal. Before opening the .php file in Smultron, it worked fine.

Steps taken: I tried to delete Smultron, it reassociated with Text.app, then I tried associating with Firefox. It changed the "kind" to "PHP script" Hmm. That seemed to work. But it actually didn't change a thing. It still opens the script on a page in firefox instead of running it.... HELP

Did you try using "preview" and file"save as"--jpeg;png etc. in the drop down menu .? i don't know for sure but that may work.

That doesn't help. I'm beginning to think it may have something to do with file permissions. Which are really messed up on this Mac and disk utility can't deal with them and Disk Warrior won't fix them because there is not enough room on the system drive... I have a new drive, but couldn't find my FCP disks, so I'm back to using the old drive to finish this project. I will have to try to do this work on my PC...
