In response to one of the posts in the now closed thread about your Mac OS X.2 wishlist...

I want a shortcut that switches to a text only console immediately. No windows to be opened, no tasks to be started, just plain old Darwin console, white on black.

Just as I can do in Linux. Because if something hicks up in OS X so that the Force-Quit dialog doesn't come up or isn't responsive anymore, you could still kill single tasks in the console. That'd be nice.

It would scare the livin' %$#^ out of newbies and casual users, and that sort of thing isn't really in the Mac philosophy. But as an option that can be activated by power users and programmers, maybe.

Anybody remember MacsBug for OS 9? That's what we're talking about here. Something that can be activated by Command-Power (Control-Eject Key is the equiv on Pro Keyboards), where it will just stick everything into the command line, and then you can kill whatever process you need to (like loginwindow, to get back to the loginwindow), and then issue a command like the MacsBug "g" command to get back to work.

Seriously, this WOULD make my day as well. That way I could preserve really long uptimes. ;) Please, Apple! (Be sure, everyone, to send Apple a note at http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ )

hey simx... your avatar... is that real or did you create something real quick?

what i mean is... when you right-click (whoops... control-click) does it really say "No Windows" or did you do a bit of Photoshop work on that?

I just control clicked my Finder icon... and since there are no windows currently open, it does, in fact say "No Windows"... And THAT, my friends, is why we love Apple.

I saw a website that had a doctored version of the Finder icon saying the same thing, so I decided -- heck, why not just take a pic of the real one? So that's what I did. It's kind of annoying, because you need to put 2 1-pixel icons to the right of the Finder icon, or you'll get some other icons in your picture -- you can actually see one of the pixels in the avatar if you look really closely.

But yes, it is real. Funny thing, though... if Apple was being grammatically correct, then it wouldn't have capitalized "Windows". I wonder why they decided to.... ;)

Yes, but I've never seen a newbie hit the prgrammers button...

On the old performas they did not even have an external programmers button... You had to use a paperclip.

What does the programmers button actually do now?!? Why not make it bring up a console?

I really hate when I have to go to another machine and SSH back to my mac just to kill a process. Having the programmers button pull up a console window would solve this problem.

I just sent this to Apple feedback...
