I just tested the first build of NeoOffice and it seems quite promising.

I posted some comments and screenshots about that build on my site.

That really looks nice. It's what I've been hoping for - only I find myself more and more without using any Office app whatsoever... But as soon as NeoOffice grows up a bit, I'll try it again.
 
But I still do not see the bright side on Java based applications. The most concern is the SPEED problme. I do not see any Java based applications have good speed on Mac OS X or even Windows (although it is still better on Windows).
 
Java has a reputation of being slow - and it is. Everything has pros and cons. The same program can run on all platforms. So you don't have to worry about OSes
 
Uh . . . I don't really see what Java has to do with NeoOffice or OpenOffice, for that matter. Yes, they support Java, but neither rely upon it, and it has no affect on the speed of the application.
 
NeoOffice is built around .jar files, maybe that's where the idea comes from... And it wouldn't surprise me if there was Java in it. It DOES feel slow like Limewire (yet).
 
hmmm....

java apps are really fast on my pc (2.0ghz)
so i have no problem with a java apps...

BUT the user interface is terrible!!!
ANd on my mac java apps run slow

i'll stick to MS Office X
