hi,
at work they've become quite picky about software licenses lately, which i understand, but which also made things more complicated..
anyway, there's a limited number of licences per software package, and not everyone gets a license for any package he/she wants. so a developer is more likely to get a license for code warrior than photoshop, and when this developer wants to use photoshop, he has to find a machine that has got it installed.. and is no used by someone else..
this can be quite a pain in the a.. sometimes, especially because i'm a little bit of everything (developer/designer/sysadmin/... etc.) but also others run into problems sometimes, resulting in people quickly installing some software illegally, to at least get stuff done, without having to wait for the right person to help them install the right software with legal license..
anyway, most developers and designers use macs. and we do have an x-serve around, somewhere in one of the server-racks in the server-space, but at the moment it's just used for some testing every now and then.
now i was wondering if OSX-server has the ability to serve accounts with certain software installed, so that if anyone wants to use FinalCut Pro, he/she just boots (netboot) from the Xserver into (one of) the account(s) that has FCP installed, and start editing video on his/her own machine..
the number of FCP-accounts would then just be limited to the number of licenses that our organisation owns. and the same for photoshop, and for any other software we (legally) use...
can osx-server do that?
is this a realistic scheme?
or am i thinking on a wrong track?
are there any other solutions?
thanks
