Hey
I have a newer iMac (500mHZ) and my dad has an earlier (333mHZ). He's running 8.6, and I am now running OS X full time. I used to run 9.1, but i like OS X better. We had a sweet ethernet network when i was running 9, but now we cant connect! Well, i can connect to HIM, but he cant connect to me! Any ideas? Any tips? Please help!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that 8.6 did AFP over TCP (If I'm wrong, someone will correct me, I'm sure :) ), so you'll need to turn on Appletalk in the Network Preferences. Kilowatt and I looked at this while on IRC once, and there's a second place where this can be turned on in Netinfo Manager, under /Config/AppleFileServer. Turns out that BOTH needed to be turned on to get a System 7 machine to properly communicate with an X machine.

I'd recommend you try the Network prefs first, and if that works, you're done. If not, go ahead and turn it on in Netinfo Manager (the 0 becomes a 1), and you'll either have to restart File Sharing or reboot the machine (I don't remember which). I've attached a screenshot of both dialogs, highlighting the items that need to be changed.

If, after you've done both of these and rebooted, it still doesn't work.... Well, we'll have to think of something. :)

Good luck!

I had the same (i thought) problem, turns out Apple Talk is not checked when you set up networking-by default. I found out when on a (cable) LAN at work i had no problem with .ftp transfers, then at home using AirPort, Fetch just sat there..., settings the same etc., did some investigating and found A/T was off, turned it on and all was well.
