Network compatibility between Tiger & Mac Classic. AFP error message!

Hello!
I'm running a G4 and just installed the system upgrade "Tiger" v10.4 and was loving every minute of it until....I went to GO, Connect to Server.

The proper machines show up on My Network and the Connect button comes up enticingly under the desired server icon, but then when clicked, it thinks for a moment and says:

CONNECTION FAILED:
"This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it."

(Don't know what AFP means)
The computer I'm trying to connect to has a shared folder designated and is running Mac Classic OS 9.1 on a standard ethernet network and it all worked fine before I upgraded to Tiger.

Sure hope you got an easy answer -- other than installing system 10 on the old machine, cause my whole transition plan calls for me to continue to service certain files (20,000+ older pagemaker files!) on good old system 9.

So, you might say, how about using the feature where you run Mac Classic over top of system 10? Well, I've been advised by our local Mac guru that that results in an unstable operating environment. Any comments on that too?

Help please!

This is what I would do!

in your system panel - under sharing.. turn on FTP. Then on OS9, using an FTP client of your choosing, FTP your files from your older system to the OSX box.

You will have to log in using your OSX account credentials - but, using FTP will probably be the fastest solution and easiest.

I used the built-in FTP service all the time.

Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8, 9 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP.

Okay---good call on the opposite direction solution. I was able to see my OSX machine on the old system's chooser, configured a shared folder on the OSX machine and I'm good to go. Thanks much.
