Network font server

In order to set up a network font server in OS X so that fonts can be installed in the network heirarchy at /Network/Library/Fonts/ do I need to be running OS X server or can I set something up with AppleshareIP. I used to use ATM delux for this but cant in OS X and I've found that Suitcase crashes when reading fonts across the network if the server isn't mounted on the desktop when you open the application. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got thousands of fonts and I really dont want to have to install them on all my users machines.
 
This is a total guess, but you may be able to use NFS or AppleFileSharing to distribute your fonts.
