I just bought a router (D-Link DI-604), and have my mac and my pc hooked up to it. On the Mac, I have DHCP enabled, and DHCP enabled on the pc. Both machines can access the Internet, but the mac cannot connect to the pc. The pc can connect to the mac if I open up an ftp client i can login to the mac with 192.168.0.100. If i am on the mac, and i try to hit 192.168.0.101 (PC), i cannot.

This is strange. So, i tried the normal tests. If on the Mac, i can only ping the router (192,168.0.1), and cannot ping the pc. If i am on the pc, i can ping the router and the mac. Can you see anything that is causing this? Why wopuld the mac not be able to see the pc? The only thing i can think of is the xp firewall but that is totally disabled.

I have the firewall turned off on the pc. Had SP2 installed and totally removed it. DHCP enabled on both. I believe i have to DHCP enabled on both, because when i went in and assigned 192.168.0.101 to the PC, then i could not access the internet anymore from the pc, and Internet connection sharing came up in my network connections. I dont think i want that.

Any help would be appreciated.

First I would check the OSX firewall isn't on either. You can find it via System Preferences > Sharing and then click the Firewall tab.

Are you by chance using another program that might be acting as a firewall?? Not to sound condescending, but I have seen people use multiple firewalls on PCs and not even know it. Check to make sure because I know Norton and McAfee come with firewalling software on most branded PCs.

What are the IP addresses, subnet masks and default gateway on each? It's possible that they've been assigned DHCP addresses on different networks.

Router: 192.168.0.1 (DHCP enabled) Subnet 255.255.255.0
PC: 192.168.0.101 (DHCP enabled) Subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1
Mac: 192.168.0.100 (DHCP enabled) Subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1

I am using XP Professional.

No, no firewalls on either machine other than the apple facory firewall which is disabled, and the XP firewall which is disabled as well. I even uninstalled the xp sp2 which contained a better firewall.

On the Mac, in the Sharing PreferencePane, do you have Windows Sharing turned on?
Under the Go Menu>Connect to Server>Click Browse. Can you see the PC?

On the PC, in My Network Places, click View Workgroup Computers. Do you see the Mac there?

If not, have you setup the Workgroup on the PC.

You may want to restart the PC and see if it helps.

What version of OS X are you using?

On the XP machine, are you using a standard user account or an Admin user account when you try connecting? Are account names the same across computers (names, pwds)? How about access settings? (admin user, normal user)

Double check the Windows firewall settings (while running as an Admin user). I've had major problems at our office with an XP Pro machine and the stock firewall being turned on again by Updates. Every time we do a 'critical update', the darn thing is enabled after rebooting.

If you don't seen the Mac under workgroup computers, try searching the entire Windows Network and see if it shows up under another workgroup.
