First, here's my setup at home:
- Titanium PowerBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 and attached to the network via the built-in Airport card
- eMac attached to the network via ethernet cable
- Netgear WGR614v4 wireless router
- Cable modem
- Brother HL-5170DN network printer
I have a Brother HL-5170DN network printer which I bought about a month ago, and have struggled with the setup for about a week. I have 2 computers on the network, an eMac and a Titanium PowerBook. Prior to adding this printer, I had no problems accessing the internet from either computer. After adding the printer, however, the PowerBook cannot do anything on the network, including accessing the internet.
Once I turn the printer on, I can see the printer from the eMac and print to it. I can also access the internet from the eMac. From the Powerbook, however, I can't print over wireless, can't print via printer sharing over the eMac, and then realized of course that this is because I have no network connection.
The strange thing is that when I look at my System Preferences, Network settings, I can see that the Powerbook has a good IP address assigned, the same as usual. When I turn the printer off and restart the router, the Powerbook regains its network connection (with the same IP address).
This problem is almost exactly the same as described in two previous Q&A posts. The first is titled, "Printer Interferes With Wireless?," (see http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q1004). The second is titled, "Setting Up Printer On Airport Express/router Network" (see http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q1487).
In the first post, the member upgraded the firmware for his router and this seemed to have worked for him. I just upgraded the firmware on mine, however, to no avail. I also tried printing via IP as suggested in the second post. This, too, did not work (of course, because the Powerbook is dead on the network). By the way, I used Rendezvous to setup the printer from the eMac and it worked like a charm.
I called Brother tech support. They tried but could not solve the problem. We did set the IP address of the printer to a static one (90). We also swapped cables between the printer and the router, tried different ports on the router, did various restarts of devices in different orders, etc. Nothing worked. In fact, the whole thing just baffled them.
I like the printer, but I like my internet access more. I read reviews for this printer, mixed networks (Mac/PC, wired/wireless) and everyone seems to set it up without any hassle. I guess it can be done, but I can't figure it out. Any help sorting this would be very much appreciated.
