Network printing Mac OS 10.3.9 to Win XP

I am trying to print from a Win XP PC to a printer attached via USB to a Mac G3 running OS 10.3.9. I can see files on this Mac from my PC but cannot get access to the printer. I have tried all the normal methods including adding the html port http://server:631/printers/printer name without any luck. It asks for a password but the Mac admin username and password don't work even though they work for gaining access to files. Printer sharing is turned on as is Windows sharing. The PC connects to the network via wireless and the Mac is connected via ethernet. I have also tried configuring the printer on the Mac by going to http://127.0.0.1:631/printers but again am confounded by the password not being accepted into CUPS. Any help would be appreciated.

The piece of the puzzle you are missing is that Mac print queues expect postscript, since every Print command on OS X produces postscript. Change to a postscript driver on Windows - Apple Color LaserWriter is a good generic one.

If you want to use the real driver from Windows, you need to Add a separate print queue on the Mac, called a raw queue (raw meaning it doesn't have a driver - it just passes input to the printer). I can tell you how to do that if you want - more advanced than regular printing setup.

I have tried changing the driver to the Apple Color LaserWriter and any other postscript driver I can find without any luck. I can't get past the configure page where it asks me for a password and the admin password dosen't work. I am able to connect to the files on the Mac computer from my PC with the admin password and the short user name but those don't work for the printer.

Yes, I have tried that several times with the correct queue name (it makes the string quite long since the queue name is "hp_LaserJet_1320_series-1"). I enter the information in the correct spot, click next and get to the password page that I cannot get past. Then the setup fails and back to square one.

Just to be sure - printer sharing and windows sharing On in Sharing Prefs?

Are you an admin user on the Windows computer? Maybe Windows isn't allowing you to add a printer.

Yep, both sharing settings are on. I am the only user on the Windows computer and I have tried my passwords but without any luck. I can add other printers without any problem.

In the utility Directory Access, is the service SMB/CIFS checked on?

Are your wired and wireless computers in the same subnet (first three parts of IP address the same like 192.168.1.4 and 192.168.1.5)?

In Directory Access, SMB is checked (I don't have a CIFS option).

The wired and wireless computers are not on the same subnet. Only the first two parts of the IP addresses are the same. Do you think this might be the problem?

Yes, I believe the IP address/subnet issue is the problem.
Please tell me some details about your network - like, do you have a router and then an Airport Extreme base station or second wireless router?
(Also, what OS X version is it?)

The Mac is running OS 10.3.9. I am at a university so the network setup is a bit odd. The Mac connects to an ethernet jack on the wall which is part of a campus-wide network. My computer (the PC running XP SP2) connects via a wireless router which is set up in the hallway. The router is connected to the campus-wide network via ethernet but is maintained and set up by our computing facility to distribute the IP addresses.

I really appreciate all of your help with this issue.

I have no experience printing across subnets - equal to printing over the internet.
It's starting to sound like maybe the OS X computer is controlled by another server that you were having to authenticate to. Any chance of that?

I don't think the Mac is controlled by another server. It is in the same room as me and I set most of it up. I can connect to the files on that computer from my PC using the short login name and password that I set up for it. But using that password and username dosen't work for the printer.

Thanks anyway for your help.

Sadly, neither of those suggestions worked. I think it must be a lost cause for some unknown reason.
Thanks again for the help!
