I'm connected through ethernet to a LAN... if i leave my computer on sleep, after returning to work on it, safari and mail don't work... if i check in system preferences, i can read that i have a self assigned ip and that i can't connect to internet...
what's happening?
What should i do?

How long does it take, till you have internet access? Or does it just come back once you reboot? Did you try to ping an internet side from the terminal? (open terminal and type 'ping www.macosx.com')

I've been having the same problem with my iBook lately.

The rather naff solution I have found is:

1) Put the computer to sleep again
2) Remove the network cable
3) Wake the computer up
4) Re-insert the network cable

It's a pain, but it works (for me).

no, it doesn't work... i had to restart, and, believe me, it's worse putting the computer to sleep again...

what happenes if you just log out and in again? And what happenes, when you setup a new useraccount and switch to that one when you have such kind of a problem?

loggin off and in again sovles the problem, but with a new user the problem is the same.... checking network in system preferences, i've also found that my internal modem has lost its settings, and the lock at the bottom left of the panel is now open, either if i closed before restarting one ore two times ago....
