Network problems with Parallels 5.0 and Mac OS 10.6.2

Hey,

I have installed Win XP on my Parallels 5.0.9310 (Mac OS 10.6.2) but am not able to get Windows to connect to Internet. I have tried updated the Devices settings in Parallels as per the instructions in their manual.

Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on how to get this to work??

Any help is highly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Tomas

How is the host Mac connected to the net?
I'd assume there should be about the same connection options for the guest as in VMware; Bridged, NAT, host only. There should be some menu item from the virtual machine or network where the connection option can be changed (from Parallels menus). Whatever is selected now, try the other options (except host only).
After changing the option, in your Windows guest go to cmd and
ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
Do you get a valid IP?

And just in case - did you restart your Mac after installing Parallels? That is one of the few softwares where the restart is required, in order for the new kexts to load properly and the software to run correctly.

Thanks for your reply!

My Mac is connected wirelessly to the internet. I tried your suggestions in Windows but I got:

ipconfig /release
The request operation requires elevation.

ipconfig /renew
The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissble for this operation.

Any further ideas?

Thanks, Tomas

Use the administrative user in your guest Windows system - when you get that error you wouldn't get it to the net even if it was on a native system.
So run cmd as your Adminsitrator user, and try again.

My guest Windows is Vista and I only have one account there. Shouldn't the UAC ask me to confirm if I am using any functions that require administrator privileges?

I opened the command prompt with "Run as administrator" and now I got the same response when running "ipconfig" release and renew:

Windows IP Configuration
The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissble for this operation.

Any more ideas?

Ah, then that makes more sense.
Disable UAC unless you enjoy using a crippled version of the system, or upgrade to XP or 7. I tried to help two housemates in the past year to get their native Windows Vista systems online, and gave up for failing to get the network interfaces enabled. Even when cmd was run elevated/as administrator, it still came with that same BS message you see there now.

Ok, let's try ipconfig /all, again as elevated.
And this may also help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 as for once the error message is listed there..

I have now managed to solve this by quite a few emails with Parallels' support. I did not have Parallels Tools installed... Installing that solved the problem directly. Thanks a lot for your help Giaguara!

Parallels Tools (or VMware Tools, when using Fusion but having the same problem) should always be installed on the guest... (one of those things one just assumes is installed by the users before going deeper in the troubleshooting). Another thing with the Tools could have been that you'd have upgraded the version of Parallels (e.g. 5 to 5.0.1 or something similar), or the guest OS, but not removed the Tools and reinstalled the new Tools (plus restarted the guest).
I'm happy that it's now working for you and you updated the thread too - it will hopefully help other users running to a similar problem later :)
