Networking Elderly Macs

Hi all,

I'm working on getting a Macintosh SE to recognize my G4 tower (running Panther). However, as could be expected, I'm running into a few snags.

I am linking the SE to my ethernet network with an ethernet/localtalk bridge. I can see the G4 in the Chooser from the SE, but it complains that the protocol of AFP is incompatible when I try to connect to it.

I need to find out what version of the AFP the SE machines wants in order to be happy and able to communicate without installing any additional programs. I don't have MacTCP installed on the SE and can't install it, primarily because I have no other machine with those funky 800k floppy drives in it.

Your help is very much appreciated. Once I get the SE connected and able to talk, I will upgrade it to MacTCP and use it as a dumb terminal for my G4 tower. That way an old computer will have a nice home and will still be useful while it's put out to pasture.

The SE is running System 6.0.5. Like I said, since I have no 800k floppies, I can't do anything as far as installing new applications or upgrading the host. But would any of the system 7.x software be able to host files for my SE?

by the way, how do you get your link at the bottom of your post to show as a link? For some reason I am having trouble doing that. (sheepish grin)
