hi, looking to replace a powermac G3 desktop in an office which has everything
on 8.6...but want to keep it accessible with networking to newer (Panther/Tiger
OSX) machines if there's a way. We have several machines successfully sharing web access with an ethernet router but would like to be able to make the 8.6 system networked for both file sharing/web access. Any work-around
to make this do-able? Help much appreciated and glad to fill in more specifics...

THanks!

Mike

I'm guessing that you mean just the part about connecting/logging in from an OS 8.6 computer to an OS X computer for file sharing, after both computers are already connected to the router and internet works OK. Hope that's what you mean...

This only works one way -- OS 8.6 can connect to (Login to) an OS X computer very easily. On OS X, turn on Personal file sharing. On OS 8.6, go to Chooser, select Appleshare, and near the bottom of the right hand side, enter the IP address of the OS X computer. When it asks for user:password, give it the username and password of a user on that OS X Mac. Now it will give you choice of authorized shares from the OS X computer - by default, this is only the home of the user you logged in as. You can authorize more shared folders using the software Sharepoints from versiontracker.com.

Let us know if this doesn't do what you want.

Hi and thanks for that info. Yes, basically the one-way would work for my purposes. Ideally I'd like to be able to access this 8.6 machine FROM any of the other OSX computers that would be on the network. At present, they are all
linked to the same cable modem by a 5 port router. What I presume i would need to do is add a switch. If this one 8.6 machine were only able to connect to one other computer, that would be okay...I guess i'm not exactly sure if this would enable me to do file 'transfer' to the OSX machine- I do gather that, from what you describe, it would not be a situation where I could transfer data FROM
the OSX machine to the OS 8.6 one. Hope this makes some sense...

THanks!

Neither OS X 10.3 or 10.4 can access OS 8.6 because OS 8.6 doesn't offer the File Sharing Control Panel option "Allow clients to connect via TCP/IP." (OS 9 has this option.) In other words, file sharing on OS 8.6 isn't capable of sharing via TCP/IP -- but OS 8.6 is capable of connecting to servers (OS X) via TCP/IP. So, this works one way only, with OS 8.6 connecting to OS X. Of course, this is sufficient, because you can copy files both ways, from OS 8.6 to OS X and from OS X to OS 8.6.

Note: As I think about this, I think it is possible that OS 10.3 still has the ability to connect to OS 8.6 for file sharing using appletalk (which is what sharing on 8.6 is limited to). But I don't have a 10.3 and 8.6 machine to try it.

Hi and Thanks much for your reply. Once I get things set up I will test this out and see what works. I appreciate your help.

Best Regards,

Mike
