New iMac Recall????

I was at my local CompUSA store here in Pittsburgh Pa. looking for the new iMac. They still do not have any. They claim that Apple has told them that there is a major recall of the new iMacs. Something to do with a bad ROM chip. They told me they were told about a week ago. I have seen nothing reported here or on the web. This particlular CompUSA is noted for bashing Macintoshes. I only go there because it is the only place to actually see Macs in Pittsburgh. Any one know is there is any truth to this.

The rumor sites have been saying that "something" is wrong for weeks now. The most recent claim I've seen is radiation Clearly, they are not shipping on schedule. Apple is expected to miss their quarterly numbers because of this. Bummer.

It's sad that a lot of the momentum created at MWSF is being wasted. However, I suspect that Apple will recover.

Well...the first iMacs have shipped over here, my local dealer already sold have a dozen...and till now, he hasn't told me anything about a recall...

I red that article about the radiation problem, but I haven't seen anything about a recall

Yeah, I've read multiple sources that say that Apple is having production line problems with the new iMacs (I think www.macuser.co.uk was a prominent one), and that shipping will be delayed. However, macminute.com reports that one user received a notice of shipment of his mid-range iMac, so maybe the problems have been rectified (or this is just one success out of many failures).

However, the scarce availability of the new iMacs is not only because Apple is failing to ship them, but because of damn-high demand. Can you imagine having to ship 150000 computers at the start of production, and then having more orders come in as you're producing them? I'm sure if there weren't problems, the new iMacs would probably still be scrace, although not nearly as scarce as they are now.

Let's hope Apple can ship the low-end iMac by the end of March. :)

I just read that the mid-range models are shipping, but don't remember from where. My computer shop has at least a display model, and it's purty :D

There's a post on mosr from a user -- his new iMac has a "wonky" apple logo on the back of its screen... I wonder if that's a possible reason for recall?

Not that it's a particularly big deal.

I am just mad at CompUSA. There is has been no offical announcement of a recall by Apple. But the CompUSA here is telling potential customers that there is and then pusing them toward a PC. I just wish Apple would drop CompUSA as a reseller.
Apple missed out on a lot sales here because of the iMac delay. We had one of our last no sales tax on computers week two weeks ago here in Pennsylvania and none of the Mac outlets here had any of the new Macs to sale.

I really think radiation is not an issue with this machine. There's not even a tube in the darn thing (a big cause of X radiation), and all the parts are commodity. If you don't have an Airport card, I dont think that much radiation will come out of this bugger.

In a previous rather long side note I had addressed this. Apple is slowly putting their own people in CompUSA's across this area. (Westchester, NYC) I'm sure it'll spread.

Apple sends the person who will be working at that CompUSA location as a secret shopper, and asks the retail jocks what machine is best for video, music, games, you name it, and they always point them to PC's.

Apple is putting their own people in now to kick CompUSA in the groin. I don't see IBM, Sony, Gateway or anyone else making that effort. It's good to see. I think if Apple continues to keep its hand in the pot while expensive, and a little agressive, it'll help get things done. It's agressive because I'm certain CompUSA is more than a little insulted. It won't sting CompUSA in their pocket though. Think about it, 1 Mac sold yields as much as 1 1/2 PCs in profits. That adds up.

Anyway, I'll stop here, because past this point I don't have facts. :)
