new iPod

It came a man with a package under his hand and rang on my doorbell yesterday, he said the package was for me and it was from Apple...

I've just got my smooth new iPod and I have some questions...

1.Where the hell does that "clicker" sound come from?

2.Why doesn't anyone make some games for the iPod? (should be possible) I love breakout:D

3.Is it possible that Apple in the future will relase soundrecording in the iPod-firmware? And a microphone (using the firewire port)

4.Hmm...I had some more questions I don't remember, well I'll add them later...

feel free to correct me, i may be wrong....

1. Well, considering you can turn the "clicker" on and off through software, the only valid answer is that the iPod does in fact contain an internal speaker simply to make that sound effect. Maybe one day we won't even need the headphones, it could just play it from the internal speaker if we like... though the thing is sealed up pretty well, so it wouldn't sound too great...

2. beats me. But I know people are trying to hack the thing as we speak. It's something every programmer seems to want to do.

I love breakout, too.

3. Possible? Yes. Likely? Who knows?

4. Um... yes... guess I shouldn't have pre-numbered.

I actually looked into audio in using the firewire port.

The best and most financially viable product would be a firewire device that was meant to write digital audio to a firewire hard drive without using a computer. It would need all the software needed to access the harddrive (including enough logic to use more than one filesystem/etc), an A to D converter, and software to tie it all together. So... it's not a small undertaking by any means, but it's totally viable, and would actually work with almost ANY firewire harddrive... although the biggest issues become power supply and whether the iPod can be a disk without bus power.

If you could have other sounds form the "hidden speaker" Apple could implement alerts for things like low battery, but Apple wants to make things simple, maybe thats the reason that it don't have som much "advanced" features.

5. Is it normal that you hear a sound that sounds like a loose part when you shake it? (not a problem, just want to se if others have it...)

6. Is it dumb to try to open it?

You're right on target about Apple keeping things simple. It's nice to have advanced features like deletion and renaming on an MP3 player, but you can much better use the comp for that. It's best to keep it simple so you get such rave reviews and lots of sales. :D

In response to 5-7:

5. How hard are you shaking it? I'm shaking it not too hard, and I hear it just a little, but I wouldn't recommend shaking it a lot. Mine works, so I won't worry about that sound.

6. Very dumb. You'll void your warrantee, and you might not be able to put it back.

7. Yeah, it would need a replaceable battery if it had a clock. It would be nice, but oh well.

YES! In the Apple tech library, there is an article about it. It's the interal harddrive. It is not harmful, they say, but in the same article they say you shouldn't shake the iPod too heavy ;)

IIRC, they mentioned that it is some kind of a savety mechanism to prevent the read/write head from scratching over the disk when the iPod is shaken, so the mounting of the heads smashes against a metal part which holds them away from the disk.

6. I have noticed that there has suddenly appeared a little icon in the top right corner, under the battery-status icon when i am playing a song. It looks like the USB icon or something...what is it? can't find any info on apple support...

I have a suggestion for the new iPod buyer... get a case. I made the mistake of not getting one, and now my Pod is pretty funky... I dont really care, just my friends always constantly badger me about how their non-apple mp3 player doesn't scratch. Anyways, they are pretty cheap and you have plenty of options - here are 2 sites:

http://www.everythingipod.com/sugge...rchSKU=001-0001&max=1&eqAVAILdatarq=YES&max=1

If you dont like these, just run a simple search on "excite" for "iPod case"

mannn.. do i hear you on that. buy a case. my ipod is really really funky. scratches everywhere. i don't really mind so much, mainly cause, i'm looking at my scratches as "character".. its like my ipod is building character with every new scratch... =\

anyways, a while back i heard of a product that removes scratches in plastic. it was called "nobus" or "novus", (i think).. anyone remember the site? or the actual name of the product??

thanks!
