new ms office options

on the apple site today they are showing 3 versions of office x. standard, pro, and student/teacher versions are all available at different prices. i can see that pro comes with virtualpc and xp pro, but is there a difference between standard and the student/teacher edition? i can't find a whole lot of detail at the apple site or ms.

I think the only difference between Standard and Student is the 3 machine licensing for the Student and the no upgrade option placed on it as well.

Also, the $329.00 upgrade for Pro left me feeling dirty and needing a shower.

Not sure, when I searched for "Office" in the online store, it didn't return the Pro version, only the other 2. Got me.

I'd assume it'd be rather soon. It's really just old software getting a new push.

Not sure... sounds more like marketing: associate the image of Windows XP with Professional: the Pro version of Office X includes Windows XP.

Okay, people need to stop complaining about the price of Office (this is a new opinion I'm formulating). Sure the upgrade price may seem a little steep compared to other software, but look at what you're getting with either version. You get a fully functional, loaded-to-the-brim word processor, spreadsheet cruncher, and presentation organizer, along with other stuff like Entourage and Encarta.

I don't see anyone complaining about the prices of Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, or Lightwave, and these all cost much more than Office. Why? Because these are professional programs, made for people who need the features that these programs come with. Office is no different. If you don't need all the flash and boondoggles of Office, then go with a cheaper alternative like Appleworks. If options like Wordart, advanced text formatting, or mindblowing charts are necessary to your line of work, then you should be able to save up and buy Office.

i tend to agree with you. my opionion on why everyone wants office so bad is because dang near "everyone" has it. their friends send them documents in office format regradless of their professional status. fact is, most of the people who have office didnt pay a dime directly for it. a version nearly always comes with a new pc or you "borrowed" a friends version.

the price is ok. what sucks is that no one seems to pay for it.

Well, the most commonly sent Office files are Word files (.doc) that can be read just fine by TextEdit in Panther (yes, that's not released just yet). Sure, some formatting or highend features are missing from TextEdit, but if you're not really missing those features and all you want to do is to be able to bloody read and print those files your 'friends' send you, then that's certainly the better way to go (than buy/steal Office v. X Professional).

There's also shareware called icWord and icExcel (or similar) that can read/print word and excel files.

However: If you want your documents to reach the recipient the way they look on YOUR screen and printer, go PDF. And also tell the Windows friends the same, as there are free-/shareware printer drivers that create PDFs in Windows. Almost like (natively) in Mac OS X. (You can just select a 'virtual' printer and any app prints to PDF.)

That's basically what I'm doing all the time when I get .doc files (although I _do_ have an Office v. X license): I tell them to create PDFs instead. If it's a customer of mine, I even offer them to 'upgrade' their IT, so they're able to have a PDF document workflow. Most of those customers are thrilled by the idea of WYSIWYG, although that idea is decades old (most .doc files just don't look the same if you open and print them on another computer, even if Windows and Office are of the same version but the printer isn't, for example).

Wow, that was longer than I anticipated. Sorry.

i know there are a zillion ways to get around stealing office. it doesnt affect me because i have it legally. fact is most people dont want a converter or to use anything else. i'm just sayin, thats all.

The problem with Office in the computer world is that it is too CHEAP (yes). So cheap that nobody else wants to develop some competition with any chance to earn his bread.

Cheap... because its price is not high for a full package. And because so many people don't pay for it... it's nearly like shareware. Would it be more expensive (and difficult to steal) than there would be some competition and this would increase its quality.

They are better alternative to Word, my favorite being FrameMaker. But they are too expensive for the usage I make of it.

interesting take. here is a thought. what is ms released an office "reader"? that is it only opened and allowed you to view said items. they did this with powerpoint for 97 or something back in the day. but (as far as i know) for windows only.

at first glance i think i could make due with such a reader. i could still write up my documents in rtf or something if need be, but at least with a reader nothing would be lost in the conversion. maybe?

That's a really good idea.

Microsoft should really be more encouraging about file standards. Imagine if everybody saved their Photoshop documents in .psd form only. Only other people with Photoshop would be able to read them, and you'd have to download pictures to open them. Obviously this wouldn't work very well, so people use standards like TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, etc. Office users should be so considerate. People should save documents in .rtf form if they are going to post them online, or even in .txt if there's little or no formatting.

instead of MS making a new office which they usually do when school is about to start again, they just made this. They couldn't add anymore features or anything that means. It's practically just the same software in 3 cool looking boxes. Wow, bravo microsoft, you've done it again.

no, they are coming out with a new office. supposedly a new document format or something. or did you mena they couldnt add any more features in the timeframe.

anyhoo, i've always been a fan of educational versions. since i'm a student and probably will be for a while yet. its always nice to be able to not have to use a school machine when projects call for office.
