If I want to maximize performance (and update) my iBook G4, how do I install a new operating system? What can the G4 handle. I'm still using 10.3.9 (I know... very old). I need to update Safari or switch to Firefox. If I install one of them does the old uninstall off my harddrive? And, instead of doing this myself, should I take it my local Mac gurus and pay them $$ to do it?

Firefox 2.0, the latest official release, will run on OS 10.3. You can install it without messing with Safari or previous installations of Firefox.

OS 10.4 (Tiger) would definitely run on your iBook. 10.5 (Leopard) is officially supported on all G4 systems with an 867MHz or faster processor. You can check the speed of your processor by select "About This Computer" from the Apple menu. (I think it would run just fine on slower systems, but those systems are not officially supported.)

Check also that you have the minimum requirement of RAM to run Tiger, which is 256mb. That info is also found in "About This Computer", then click on "More Info", then System Profiler launches and just click Memory in the left column to display the details.
