New Owner! Where to order RAM?

Hello all,

Does anyone know of a good reputable place to order 512 of ram for a IBook? Are any specific brands recommended over others?

After deciding on a IBook or Powerbook, I ended up getting at 14'' IBook. So far so good, I'm really excited about OS X, but man it seems sooooooooo sluggish compared to my Windows XP system. I have 256 megs of ram, would an upgrade to 640 make a noticeable difference? I'm regretting not getting a 12'' powerbook now, but the price difference was a bit too much for me, also I like having the larger monitor.

Does a G4 processor run OS X significantly faster? I read that OS X is omptized for G4 processors.

Also can anyone recommend any good tutorial sites to fine tune and maximize OS X performance? Also what are some other good Mac sites? So far all I know of is this site and macrumors.com

Thanks all!

Dan

And yes, the more RAM the better when it comes to OS X (or any OS for that matter). In my experience (having both a G4 and a G3) OS X does run significantly faster on the G4, even though the processor in my G3 is 150 MHz faster. Unless you are a power user, you will probably not notice a huge difference though.

As far as tutorial sites, I can't think of a better one than this one. Take some time and look through the thread, even some of the older ones going back to the beginning. That's what drew me here in the first place, and it is what made me stay. I've found the answer to 99.999% of my questions here from these great people.

As far as some good Mac sites, here's a list. I'm sure others would have some great ones to add.

I apologize in advance if some of these links are broken or if I listed some more than once. I just copied them out of my address book, and honestly haven't visited some of them in quite some time.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the boards!

Ebolag4,

Wow, it looks like your bookmarks are the same as mine!

I highly suggest Macs for Dummies. It will walk your though your Mac in everyday terms - not high techno stuff.
If your iBook has OS X, I suggest you also get Mac OS X the missing Manual by David Pogue.

On this forum, no question is stupid. Just ask away.

p.s. if anyone follows those links and finds a dead one, please let us know. :)

And add one more web site under tutorials:
http://www.macassistant.com/
It started back in System 7.5 and is now doing the switch to OS X.
