Ever heard of the New and Emergent World models Through Individual, Evolutionary, and Social learning project? New Ties

It's very interesting, be sure to read the Powerpoint summary (pdf) at the bottom of the page.

Today there was an article in the Flemish newspaper "deMorgen", they called it The Sims, but then more realistic. In The Sims you decide how your "sims" live. But in the New Ties project each "sim", called agents in this project, have they're own life. They decide wether they're going to eat, go to another place, etc.. They will go thrue an evolution. At the end they will probably ask themselves, when they have become smart enough, where they come from.

Check everything on the website, it's really a very interesting read!

thanks for sharing, I've been following, about 3-4 years ago, a friend of mine's startup whose idea was to have an interactive "clone" enabling you to surf the web/e-mail shop... but on a simple TV with a setup box and voice command. all based on A.I. unfortunately went bust with the nasd & .com bubble.

The ppt(pdf) summary is interesting indeed but a little "opaque" but nothing to do with the info, I have the same kind of problem in reading prelude to foundation from Asimov ;-)

Two different novels I've read recently have speculated that one day the internet (or some faster, more complex descendant of the internet) will become self-aware. One novel imagined the new AI being mankind's friend, the other imagined the AI viewing us as dim-witted children that it has to protect.

A project like this one sounds like it could become the first step in that direction.
