New to Mac: Troubleshooting/Upgrading etc

My sister just handed me down her MBP Intel based dual core machine. It is running Tiger. I am having a few issues with it and I was hoping to get some help.
Come to think of it its pretty much one issue with other sub issues. Im trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I go into the Disk Utility, the buttons under Erase, Namely the "Erase" and "Security Options" buttons, are shaded and I am not able to select them. I tried running the first aid functions but they did nothing to help. I wanted to wipe my drive completely clean before upgrading to os 10.6. That brings me to another question:

Is it possible to load os 10.6 to a blank HD? Mac website says you need to be running the most recent OS before going to Lion and I wasnt sure if it was the same for S.L.
Also, how would I go about loading the new OS after I format? Can I go into the store to do this or will I need to order the Discs from Mac.com?

Hope I made myself clear and I look forward to any response I can get.

Thanks, Iz
