new to mac

Had the mac book 4 weeks, iphoto says it needs to be upgraded to open this version. When i attempt to do this it closes saying it will not be readable by previous versions.

So, now not able to get into the previous version or an upgraded :{

Can anyone help with what i may have done by mistake? i need this to open for a presentation and have never had a mac before.

At present nothing opens now with iphoto.
 
It shouldn't be "closing" saying it won't be usable in previous version, it should give you the option to _open_ it that way.
