Ok I am brand new to mac's. I live my life in the pc world, but I want to try something different. I am looking at purchasing an emac. I like to surf the web, do some web development, imageing and small amount of video editing. I am really into open source so that why my interest is peaked. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Those kinds of direct links expire after a while, you may want to post a picture of what you were looking for or tell us :).

surf the web
safari is a wonderful browser built by apple
some web development
Personally i love working with Dream Weaver MX
imageing and small amounts of video editing
hey, thats what the mac is for right?! Photoshop Elements ($100) is probably going to be what you want since you arn't going to be doing a whole lot of sutff you wouldn't want to pay $610 for photoshop it self.
and you won't have to pay a cent for video editing because we have iMovie free and works well. (you can also take a step up by going to Final Cut Express which is cheeper than FC Pro but with all the essentials.)

i suggest to you that you get a G4 tower for the kind of stuff you are going to do because later on you are going to want to up grade your video card or you are going to want to add a PCI cards. But if you buy an all in one comp (iMac/ eMac) all you will be able to do is upgrade RAM (and believe me it really sucks.

Links:

Safari * Dreamweaver MX * Photoshop Elements * Photoshop * iMovie * Final Cut Express * Final Cut Pro * G4 Tower * eMac * iMac

hope this was useful

Thanks for the info. I do agree I thought about my choice and think that I am going to go with the tower G4 1gig. 256 memory to start, DVD/CDR-RW. I think that it will work better for me. Can you tell me is there allot of open source, and freeware available for the Mac? If so do you have some good sites that I could go to? Thanks again!

Hi loom001, I've had my first Macintosh in a long time since Christmas. Prior to that I spent most of my non-working hours running linux, I think I can talk a bit about Open Source software under MacOS X.

MacOS X has really opened up the potential to use Open Source software with Apple products partially because it's underpinnings are UNIX which is where most of the Open Source software is developed.

The first site I would recommend would be fink. Fink is an Open Source distribution that runs on top of MacOS X. You install a package manager and then select what software you want installed. You can install gimp for image editing, various games and even scientific applications. You didn't say what you wanted so I'm being very vague.

The second site I'll point you at is at Apple itself, and that's their X11 implementation since most Open Source software with any sort of gui runs under X11.

For freeware there's a wide variety available and the good thing is that most of it is native Aqua, so it has an identical look and feel to any other MacOS X application. I usually check out MacOSX Apps.

Don't forget http://versiontracker.com/macosx - you'll find just about everything for the Mac on there, from open source software through Free- and Shareware right to the commercial applications in the newest version. If there's a download, you can directly download through Versiontracker, but they also link to the developer's website. It's a great place to start and keep up to date.
