Newbie - need a bit of help :)

Hi there,

I need some advice from people who know a lot more than me about OSX.

To cut a long story short - I run a small Music Tech training facility in the UK. We're using Macs and a student has been using the Mac desktop as a forum for sharing dodgy software (PC-based).

I'm trying to use the Mac to pin-point how it got on there.

I kinda know what I'm looking for but:-

Is there any way of logging what USB devices were connected (pen-drives) on given date/time?

Failing that is there any method of discovering what the originating format was called (if I Apple "I", I can find out the destination folder, but not where it came from)

Any ideas?

Hi Dan

don't think I can help but here's a few ideas you might like to dig :

give you're thread a title as precise as possible as to what your problem is that will attract more response.

I'm not a geek but maybe thru terminal or the OSX logs you might be able to trace what external usb device was connected and when worth checking... or they're maybe ways to block the usb port of which I'm afraid I'm not aware of sorry.

Kick the students butt (I'm joking obviously) for connecting external devices with stuff that has nothing to do with your musical classes ;-) or create a rooster as to who uses the computer on a specific day/time and if you do a find by date created/modified you might be able to confront the student with the mess he's creating.

I do hope some ideas might be helpfull in order for you to get rid off these dodgy PC softs.

Go into Applications -> Utilities -> Console and check the log files for the time you're suspicious of. System.log usually logs the name of any devices or disk that is mounted or ejected.

I also second the idea to create a rooster. Thats the best typo I've seen all day. ;-)

As an Italian born in switzerland, my second mother tongue being french, third language learned at shool was german and eventually English I can afford the Luxury ot typos )) don't you think ?

Roster will do too and @ least they don't carry that *%"@& virus getting closer to us everyday :-(
