newbie Q: ampersand doesn't work

in *NIX, I always use emacs in its own x-window using :

%emacs &

but when i do this in OSX it doesn't work, and it suspends the emacs process. This happends whether i'm using just the native osx terminal or the x11 terminal with quartz-wm running. please help, thanks.
 
I don't think the version of emacs that's included with OS X has X Windows support. It's probably just trying to run in the terminal, but doesn't appear to do anything. See if there's an xemacs available, and that might do the trick.
